PROJECTS AND COLLABORATIONS

WORLDWIDE

The San Bernardino Theater of California partnered with the Fontana Unified School District to provide a suite of services and work-based learning experiences. Students grades 5-8 participated in afterschool theatre Conservatory classes.  Then they were offered a chance to audition to perform in one of six professional productions, job shadowing actors and stage technicians. Special weekday performances at the theatre, featuring students in lead roles, were provided to the Fontana Unified School District,  and some students were invited to perform with the professional cast for weekend and evening shows. Each year between 2500 and 3500 students were able to attend a production, and for many it was their first experience with live theater.

City leaders recognized Fontana Unified School District and its Future Shapers Academy students for their design contributions to hypothetical entertainment centers in Downtown Fontana. Thirty-two students worked every Wednesday for 15 weeks with local community and industry partners on completing design challenges that contributed to the project.

The FSA is a work-based learning environment and career technical education program created last year by the FUSD. Students from the program presented their contributions to city staff on the Downtown Core Project, which will develop Fontana into a local and regional destination.

“In May, students presented their final plans for eight Fontana parcels to industry and city representatives,” said Hillary Wolfe, senior director of college, career and economic development for the FUSD.

Loma Linda Hospital's Give Back program worked with CTE students to train them as Outreach Ambassadors. These students learned leadership skills, marketing, and public speaking as they worked as peer mentors for 9th and 10th graders. Outreach Ambassadors introduced CTE to middle schoolers and supported campus activities and wrap-around support meetings.
